Job Description The Animal Science Center is part of the Office of Research, a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work; from finding funding, to creating proposals, to helping inventions find their way to the public.

Summary Perform a variety of tasks related to the care of all Animal Science Center's laboratory animals and the maintenance of the animal facilities. Some of those species being mice, rats, zebrafish, zebra finches, and more. Technicians can be rotated across facilities and at times assigned specifically to facilities needing coverage.
Responsibilities include - Provide feed and water, and basic husbandry care
- Cleans and sanitizes cages according to prescribed standards
- Observes animals daily to assess health, environmental conditions, and social environment
- Maintains accurate and up to date cage cards, animal histories, and other records as required
- Receive and house newly arrived animals from approved vendors according to established procedures
- Maintain housing rooms, storage areas, and procedure rooms daily including sweeping and mopping floors; sanitizing equipment
- Practices safety, environmental, and biosecurity control methods
- Completing duties as assigned in both ABSL-1 and ABSL-2 facilities
Required Skills Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of animal husbandry requirements, methods, and techniques
- Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures
- Foster positive and constructive workplace relations
- Time management of assigned duties when working independently
- Flexibility working in a changing environment
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to animal husbandry
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures
- Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms and progress
- Communicate clearly and effectively across multiple streams; computer, tablet, smartphone
Requirements/Qualifications - High school diploma or GED
- Some previous animal care experience preferred.
- ALAT certification (not required)
