Position Summary



Position located at the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST), housed within UCLA's School of Education and Information Studies (SE&IS). Oversee information technology projects for a university research center; assist staff and researchers on projects and provide advice on IT matters. Consult with principle investigators and project managers to incorporate technology in the design of grant proposals and the deployment of solutions for funded projects. Provide budget estimates for IT cost. Conduct research on project requirements from IT's perspective, ensure project compliance with IRB requirements, data sharing agreements, FERPA and UC policies with regard to human subject data and make recommendations to ensure compliance. Establish protocols for safe transfer and storage of sensitive data; devise plans for new applications that interface with the campus data warehouse. Provide support for use and integration of campus business systems and ensure compliance with University policies. Design and develop project websites or improve existing ones as necessary using Drupal or WordPress, MySQL databases and appropriate themes, plugins and custom PHP code. Devise applications for custom use cases in Center research, administration, or other business activities, by selecting established paradigms, software design patterns, appropriate tools and environments (cloud, on premises) and a suitable programming language (either compiled or interpreted, as fitting the use case). Design and maintain the general IT infrastructure for department including providing end user support. Oversee and share expertise with end user support group. This role will manage urgent and complex issues by setting customer expectations, devising, and implementing action plans, being available as required and professionally communicating to all parties involved.

Qualifications



  • 2 - 3 Years As IT Manager, or related IT research or professional experience. (Required)
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (Preferred)
  • 1. Experience administering server environment for a minimum 75 users using Microsoft Active Directory, SMB file sharing, BitLocker encryption, Hyper-Virtualization and Office365 tenant. (Required)
  • 2. Knowledge of Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements, data security and privacy standards, Family educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)/Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) requirements and data encryption standards. (Required)
  • 3. Demonstrated knowledge of software and web development including automation of administrative and data collection workflows, system interfaces, data integration processes, graphical user interfaces and custom interactive web applications to capture and disseminate data. (Required)
  • 4. Demonstrated knowledge of PHP or other script languages including Python or Ruby as well as knowledge of compiled programming languages including Java or C#.Experience applying software lifecycle models to application development projects. (Required)
  • 5. Experience conducting design, implementation, deployment, operation and maintenance of server systems including relational database systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle), and Content Management Systems including Drupal and WordPress. (Required)
  • 6. Experience utilizing Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure cloud computing services for deploying virtual project and web servers, database systems, storage, networking, and AI services. (Required)
  • 7. Experience writing scripts for managing servers and applications, including but not limited to OpenSSH, PHP and MySQL.Demonstrated knowledge of automated operating system deployment for Windows and MacOS, imaging solutions, Mobile Device management software, ASM and JAMF. (Required)
  • 8. Demonstrated knowledge of standard operating systems including Windows, MacOS and Linux.Knowledge of software including Office365, Adobe Creative Suite, Box, Zoom, DocuSign, Slack and statistical software including SPSS and SAS. (Required)
  • 9. Demonstrated knowledge of networking technologies including, TCP/IP, Local Area Networks (LAN), Ethernet switches, Wi-Fi and Virtual Private Networks (VPN). (Required)
  • 10. Experience troubleshooting hardware and software issues as well as repairing computers and other IT systems including AV technology, video conferencing systems and telecommunications equipment. (Required)
  • 11. Demonstrated experience writing concise, logical, grammatically correct documents and training materials. Ability to conduct group presentations utilizing oral and written communication skills. (Required)

  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field. (Required)
