Job Description
Primary Function:
The Director is an active member of the Parish Team that is responsible for the effective design, facilitation and implementation of the parish liturgical ministry program. A special emphasis is placed on the coordination and formation of parish cantors, choirs and accompanists and fostering participation by the assembly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, Abilities and Experience:
- Bachelor Degree in music or equivalent
- Skills in the following areas: keyboard, voice and conducting
- Active member of the Roman Catholic Church
- A knowledge of history and repertoire of sacred music
- A pastoral, prayerful person committed to personal and professional growth
- Possess planning, management, relationship, and communication skills with the ability to utilize these skills in a pastoral manner
- Flexibility and availability to work evening and weekend hours
- The ability to successfully complete a criminal history and background check
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Sever as a member of the Parish Staff and the Parish Liturgy Committee.
- Prepare and submit annual budget.
- Participate in decision-making regarding overall and liturgically specific parish direction and activities.
- Organizes and maintains equipment used by musician including but not limited to organ, piano, microphones, stands, sound systems and hand bells.
- Works with presiders and liturgical ministers to discern parish worship and prayer needs and to assure quality liturgical celebrations and sacramental services.
- Provides input as needed for scheduling and formation of liturgical ministers and is responsible for scheduling and training of music ministers for all liturgies.
- Coordinates all parish vocal and instrumental music groups.
- Responsible for all music associated with worship, religious education, social ministry and evangelization in the parish.
- Responsible for coordinating and staffing all liturgies with competent musicians.
- Responsible for the music selection, worship aids, and musicians for all regular and special
celebrations. These include:
52 Sundays 1st Fridays Triduum Holy Days of Obligation Christmas
All Sacraments Funerals Weddings Parish Mission Communal Penance
Vespers
Add all other major parish celebrations,
Diocesan celebrations including Chrism Mass, Ordinations, etc.
11. To build and sustain congregational song at Sunday Masses.
12. Working with musicians and cantors to develop process for consistent music selections for all Sunday Masses. (Same music for all Masses each Sunday)
13. To help increase regular attendance at liturgies through the quality of music.
14. To recruit, train and sustain cantors for Sunday Masses.
15. Integrate music and need for musicians into parish Family in Faith program.
16. Attend weekly Parish Staff meetings on Tuesday morning, Staff Meals and Staff development activities.
17. Keep open lines of communication with other members of the Parish Staff regarding concerns of interest: Youth Minister, Director of Faith Formation, etc.
18. Maintains awareness of current trends in liturgy and music by reading church documents and professional journals, researching new music and by attending workshops and conferences.
19. Develop and maintain parish "musicians" web page.
20. Utilize available music programs (Finale and others) to enhance and transpose music for all involved in the parish music ministry.
21. Work with Diocesan Music Director to find or develop training programs for parish musicians.
22. Develop and maintain parish worship aids for Sundays and special celebrations.
23. Develop and maintain parish music book.
24. Review all hymnals annually.
25. Provides accurate copyright information.
26. Develop Youth Choir (including Christmas Choir)
27. Develop relationship with Owensboro Catholic Schools (OCS) to assist in school celebrations and liturgies.
28. Work with all parish communities including the Burmese to identify music needs.
29. Personal accompaniment by keyboard, organ and guitar.
30. Collaborates with other parish music directors and outside contacts to facilitate the growth of new ideas.
31. Teach new music, both contemporary and traditional that reflects Vatican II theology and Scriptural texts.
32. Performs other duties as requested by the Pastor and Business Manager.
