JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Animal Science of the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources at the University of Connecticut is seeking applicants for a full-time Financial Assistant 1. The ideal candidate is a dynamic, engaged, and detail-oriented individual with the ability to work independently and in a team setting. The selected candidate will be expected to provide financial and administrative support to the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Animal Science which is recognized for services to Connecticut through graduate and undergraduate education, outstanding internal and public outreach programs, engaged scholarship and nationally recognized research programs. This position reports to the Business Manager within the department and is located on the Storrs Campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide financial and administrative support for the successful operations of the Department of Animal Science.
  • Process cash and check deposits in accordance with State and University guidelines. Monitor online credit card transactions.
  • Assist the financial officer/business manager with all accounting matters including but not limited to farm animal units, creamery, meat lab, and purchases. Drafts financial and payroll transactions including student and graduate payroll authorizations.
  • Responsible for Animal Science merchandise sales such as wool blankets, etc.
  • Serve as a resource and primary liaison for university required travel including current policies and procedures; assist UConn faculty, staff, students (and guests on travel including pre-trip through post-trip processes; coordinate travel (and itineraries) for outside visitors including seminar speakers and candidates for open positions; assist faculty to coordinate field trips.
  • Assist with maintaining the Department's online UConn Marketplace and ensure the deposit of income into appropriate accounts.
  • Provide general support to faculty, staff, and students, including but not limited to assistance with the operation of general office equipment. 
  • Facilitate payments/reimbursements, through the current financial management system and/or the University Pro-Card; place orders with vendors and provide follow-up and troubleshooting that ensures timely receipt of supplies and payments. 
  • Assist with processing the Department's staff and student timecards each pay period.
  • Maintain fiscal records/files consistent with annual record retention procedures including payroll authorizations, offer letters, purchasing, Pro-Card, travel, UConn Foundation disbursements, invoices, travel reimbursements, and other financial documents.  Prepares reports as needed.
  • Support departmental programming and outreach activities across various campus locations.
  • Performs related duties as required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree and two to three years of recent, relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Documented proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel) and Adobe.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting while taking initiative and exercising sound judgment.
  • Clear, positive, and professional writing, grammatical, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to problem solve, expertly manage time and deadlines, and skillfully manage priorities.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible work schedule as needed including occasional evening and weekend hours based on departmental needs.
  • Driver's license required for occasional use of State vehicle to support departmental programming and outreach activities that require travel to various campus locations throughout the Storrs campus and the local area.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in a related field and one to three years of recent related experience.
  • Experience working in a fiscal operation in a university or collegiate setting.
  • Experience with Kuali Financial Systems (KFS), KFDM, CORE, Husky Buy, UConn Marketplace, Concur, or similar enterprise systems.
  • Knowledge of University of Connecticut policies and procedures related to financial transactions. 

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, permanent position. The primary work location is at the Storrs campus. Travel to other campuses may be required to support departmental programming and outreach activities. This position may also work occasional evening and weekend hours based on departmental needs. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
