Job Description

(Remote-With potential to travel up to six times per year within the continental United States) 

 

NexGen is currently seeking a  GIS Data Specialist  comfortable working with multiple teams and team members that report into different organizations. The GIS Data Specialist will provide remote support with a focus on managing and maintaining GIS data in the GIS database. The Specialist will utilize Esri GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro, Esri geodatabases hosted on MS SQL Server, AGOL, and ArcPy, to manage, analyze, and maintain geospatial data. The role requires a strong understanding of data management, quality control, and the ability to communicate complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders. This individual will be required to work closely with members of the NexGen’s and client’s teams, including but not limited to subject matter experts, technical leads, and project managers. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:  

Data Management & Analysis:

· Work with the Task Manager and other specialists (District/field office specialists) to translate digital/paper files into data for entry into the GIS database.

· Review and input data into a national database.

· Re-evaluate and update existing data and associated GIS feature records in a national database.

· Check and verify GIS features and records in the national database for accuracy.

· Organize, manage, and maintain data using database software, GIS tools, and statistical software.

· Implement and adhere to quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures to ensure data accuracy and integrity.

· Develop, update, and maintain metadata for geospatial, tabular, and image data.

· Document data management processes and workflows, including metadata creation and maintenance.

· Support the dissemination of program data and information through the creation of maps, reports, diagrams, and charts.

· Assist the department by cleaning and preparing data products for various program needs.

 

Project Coordination & Reporting:

· Participate in project kick-off meetings, weekly progress calls, and provide monthly written progress reports.

· Coordinate with the Task Manager and other specialists to ensure timely and accurate data entry into the GIS database.

· Contribute to the generation of digital map products and assist with data sharing and management activities.

· Assist with data sharing and data management activities.

 

Technical Skills/Experience:  

· Minimum of 2 years of experience in GIS data management and analysis, with a focus on environmental or natural resources.

· Proficiency in Esri GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro and Esri geodatabases.

· Strong knowledge of MS SQL Server and ArcPy for geospatial data management.

· Experience in implementing QA/QC procedures for data management.

· Familiarity with GIS-based information systems and data validation processes.

 

Additional Skills:  

· Ability to work independently in a remote environment while meeting project deadlines.

· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

· Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

· The successful candidate will also be able to pass background screening prior to employment.

· US Citizenship, or legal permanent residence, or US work authorization with minimum 3 years of continuous US presence is required due to federal contract requirements. 

 

Desired Skills:

· Familiar with Agile methodologies in a federal government environment.

 

Education/Experience:  

· Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field.
