Job Description

International School of Brooklyn is dedicated to ensuring that our school’s commitment to an inclusive and just world is reflected in all aspects of our school: in our classrooms, school culture, policies, and practices. ISB’s comprehensive commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion requires all staff and faculty members to actively and thoughtfully engage in work, training, and reflection around identity, anti-racism, and anti-bias.

All staff and faculty members are expected to promote an inclusive and equitable school community. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to anti-bias and anti-racism work and be open to learning about how implicit biases in race, ethnicity, gender identity, and socioeconomic class can shape curricula and pedagogy. Preferred candidates will have experience implementing anti-racist and equitable practices in their teaching and work.

International School of Brooklyn seeks a dynamic, hardworking, full-time Middle School English Teacher for the 2024-25 school year and beyond.

The ideal candidate is one who understands and enjoys working with middle school students (ages 11-14), who loves English literature and language, and who inspires students to love them as well. Other ideal attributes include commitment, patience, strong classroom management skills, positive energy, a sense of humor, and commitment to making curriculum accessible to all types of learners.

Description of Position

  • Teach multiple sections of 6th and 7th grade English classes
  • Serve as a Homeroom advisor for a group of middle school students
  • Help run division-wide clubs, electives, and/or standardized test prep sessions when needed
  • Write detailed narrative reports twice per year
  • Write recommendations in support of students’ high school applications (as needed)
  • Develop unit planners in line with the IB’s philosophy, including hands-on investigations and real-world projects
  • Foster a positive, inquiry-based learning environment
  • Support students outside of class as needed during the school day
  • Provide timely and consistent feedback to students and families
  • Communicate effectively and build strong partnerships with students, families, and colleagues
  • Attend and chaperone annual overnight trips (as needed)

Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience, preferably in a middle school setting; experience teaching in an independent, international, or IB school is a plus
  • Degree in English or education, and/or significant experience and skill teaching English Language and Literature
  • Familiarity with and commitment to inquiry-based learning
  • Supportive, student-centered approach and ability to differentiate instruction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective classroom management skills with commitment to restorative practices
  • Comfort and experience with educational technology including Google Suite
  • Collaborative spirit and a commitment to being a team player
  • Dedication to professional growth and participation in school-wide initiatives

To Apply:

Interested candidates should email a cover letter and resume to Katie Rogers, Director of Middle School, at jobs@isbrooklyn.org, and include “English Teacher” in the subject line of the email. No phone calls, please.

Salary Range: $63,178-$103,940 (based on experience)
