Duties

The mission of the Applied Physics Division is to advance measurement science and technology in areas of critical importance to national priority needs, such as, advanced manufacturing, national security, quantum communications, strategic computing, and quantitative imaging!


As the new Physical Scientist on our team you will:

• Assists in research and development of novel radiometers for use with extreme ultraviolet wavelengths.
• Performs electrical and mechanical design, fabricates, and assembles a prototype radiometer for testing, including electrical, mechanical, thermal, and ultra-high vacuum components.
• Interacts with equipment vendors and outside experts to facilitate the design and implementation of the radiometer.
• Develops control software for data acquisition through a GUI interface.
• Uses simulation and models to effectively design and predict the operation of the radiometer.
• Communicates and collaborates with team members, other NIST teams, and external teams.
• Prepares written reports and documentation for operation and safety.
• Presents and publishes results as appropriate.
• Engages with external collaborators as needed to facilitate testing.

Individual Occupational Requirements

Basic Requirements:


1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.


OR


2. Combination of education and experience - education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirements , applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as:

• Design, simulation, and testing of compact, vacuum-compatible instrumentation.
• Experience with precision optical and radiometric measurements using appropriate laser safety procedures and protocols.
• Expertise in software development (Python or Labview preferred) for instrument control, data acquisition, and analysis, as well as 3D CAD for modeling.
• AND knowledge and experience of physical processes and physics of light interacting with materials.

OR


Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements.



OR


A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
