Job Description

Position Summary

The Student Success Coach (SSC) will assist students as they transition to Bryan College, focusing on student success and persistence to graduation. Coaches will provide guidance and instruction in non-cognitive skill development, academic planning, campus resources, and student engagement. Additionally, the SSC will provide direct assistance and coaching to any student who has been deemed “at risk.” They will contact and meet with students frequently and maintain records on each of their assigned students.

Reports to: Director of Student Success

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience Required

Knowledge of undergraduate students, student development, career counseling, academic advising, student retention, student success strategies and services, educational theory and practice, FERPA regulations, and other ethical/legal issues relevant to advising, program and curriculum assessment, and academic and administrative policies/procedures.

Knowledge of the curricula and programs offered at the College.

Knowledge of and commitment to the College mission and aims.

Ability to think critically, produce and analyze reports and proposals, and resolve organizational and individual problems in collaboration with other learning professionals as appropriate.

Excellent planning, leadership, supervisory, and collaboration skills.


Coaching and Instructional Responsibilities (55%):

Provide personalized academic success coaching to a diverse caseload of students, including at risk probation, first-year, and transfer students.

Develop and deliver workshops and seminars on non-cognitive skill development, time management, and effective study techniques.

Conduct one-on-one and group instructional sessions focused on academic planning, resource utilization, and campus engagement.

Create and distribute instructional materials to support student success, including guides on using campus resources and achieving academic goals.

Provide ongoing instruction and support to students identified as “at risk” to help them develop effective learning strategies.

Devise success strategies and implementation plans with students based on their needs, strengths, and goals.

Provide quality academic advising to small caseload of students as assigned.

Student Support and Administrative Responsibilities (45%):

Provide accountability for students with course scheduling, time management, and long-range planning.

Collaborate with faculty and other campus resources to support student intervention and advocacy

Assist in coordination of academic alerts and Bryan360 system for implementing intervention strategies for students who receive alerts from faculty reports

Provide support, services, assistance, and referrals to appropriate university offices.

Provide walk-in services, short-term interventions, and digital guidance as needed.

Work on additional tasks as assigned.

Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.

Ability to understand, speak, and write English to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.

Ability to work effectively with students of all cultural backgrounds.

Attentiveness to detail and strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them efficiently and timely.

Ability to understand and abide by federal and college guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements.

Excellent listening skills.

Computer experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), databases, and spreadsheets.

Familiarity with (or willingness to become familiar with) the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) core values and best practices.

Willingness to expand and contribute to the scholarship of professional advising via presentations or articles in the field of higher education – specifically student success.
