World Language Teacher - One-Year Position

French

Belmont Day School seeks a dynamic, skilled, and creative world language teacher for a one-year position to teach French in grades pre-kindergarten through four and grade six and to collaborate with a skilled team of faculty. This person will be an integral member of the world language department and grade-level teams.

The lower school French curriculum is currently unit-based with a focus on mastery. Sixth grade is the first of a three-year series of French I. This proficiency-based curriculum prepares students for further study in seventh and eighth grades. This role will collaborate with the seventh and eighth grade French teacher.

This is a full-time, exempt, and benefit-eligible one-year position, beginning on August 26, 2024, and ending on June 17, 2025. It is a ten-month position and reports to the lower school head. This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored relocation.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and create a lower school French curriculum that includes grammar, vocabulary, reading and aural comprehension, oral activities, and cultural aspects of the language.
  • Utilize authentic materials and resources to design and deliver rigorous, effective, and compelling curricular experiences.
  • Work to ensure academic excellence, namely, the ability of students to approach novel tasks with the confidence, mindset, and skills to accomplish them successfully.
  • Collaborate with the grade-level teams and the world language department to support co-curricular programming and the development of children and adolescents beyond the classroom.
  • Keep careful anecdotal and assessment records to inform and write comprehensive student reports.
  • Provide regular, constructive, and specific feedback to students to encourage their growth and improvement as French language learners.
  • Establish and maintain strong home-school partnerships with families to ensure students’ success.
  • Commit to fostering a diverse and inclusive community in and out of the classroom.
  • Support students with varying learning styles and profiles through differentiation.
  • Engage with students routinely by providing coverage at lunch, recess, dismissal, or other duties as needed.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Proficiency in and experience teaching French
  • Experience teaching elementary and middle school-aged students

  • Ability to develop thematic and cumulative curriculum
  • Commitment to professional development and best practices in teaching
